This guide describes shared programs and projects from the 2006-2007 school year. This expanded edition documents Ohio State involvement with schools, school districts, or school-age children and youth through hundreds of cooperative efforts in all 88 Ohio counties and beyond.

The Ohio State University School Partnerships 2006 Summary

This guide describes shared programs and projects from the 2005-2006 school year. Expanding on the 2005 guide, which documented partnerships with Columbus Public Schools, this new edition provides information on hundreds of cooperative efforts between the university and those who work with school-age children and youth in all 88 Ohio counties, highlighting OSU involvement in programs that improve the performance of Ohio schools.

Partnership Resources

The P-12 Project is developing a sufficiency model of university-community partnerships that describes the conditions that would be sufficient to support three types of partnerships. The resources on the Partnerships page are part of this model.

2006 P-12 Conference: Section 504 Materials

Kid Corps

OSU Kid Corps is designed to help at-risk preschoolers enter school prepared to succeed. The program serves approximately 170 preschool children (and their families) enrolled in early childhood centers that provide services for children who are considered at risk for low achievement in school. Kid Corps engages approximately 60-70 Ohio State students who receive work-study awards as part of their financial aid package in work as mentors and teachers. Students across academic disciplines are welcome in the program as well as those students who are majoring in child development and early education. Kid Corps website

Ohio EMPT Program

The Ohio Early College Mathematics Placement Testing Program is a high school mathematics intervention program designed to help high school students make decisions about taking mathematics courses while still in high school. The Ohio EMPT Program tests are administered to high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors, who receive personalized reports of their performance with a list of mathematics courses required for their intended major and remedial courses that might be required. Students are able to request course information in terms of the curriculum at any of the participating Ohio colleges and universities. The service is free and available online with testing anywhere and any time (within a 2-week testing period). See the EMPT website for more information.

Career Information for Students

Mycooljob.org gives middle school and early high school students a taste of the real world of work. Four major in-demand career fields are highlighted: Engineering, Information Technology, Arts and Communication, and Health Sciences. This WOSU Public Media project includes free job-related content from the Columbus Dispatch and was funded by an E-Tech grant.

Teachers' Guide to the Wexner Center

OSU's Wexner Center for the Arts features a variety of P-12 programs and arts performances for educators. For more information about these arts programs see the Teacher section of the Wexner Center website.

Stone Laboratory P-12 Education Programs

Did you know as a teacher you can bring your class (Grade 4 or above) to Stone Laboratory during the spring and fall for a special custom-designed workshop/field trip that can include a science cruise on research vessels,fish dissections, identification of plankton using microscopes, bird walks, insect walks, invertebrate collections, seining, history discussions, and much more. Center for the Study and Teaching of Writing

The Office of International Affairs oversees the Study Abroad program, International Student and Scholar services, the Mershon Center for International Security Studies, and five Area Studies Centers and sponsors international education outreach programs and special events. Internationalization serves as a powerful catalyst to transform students into knowledgeable, understanding and responsible citizens of the state and the world community. Programs focus on language, culture, and current economic, political, and social events. The office offers a host of education and learning resources: professional development workshops; study abroad opportunities; free loan libraries of videos, cultural boxes, and photo exhibits; and a speakers’ bureau. They also can tailor interactive themes into presentations for a wide variety of audiences.

Available resources also include content and professional resources as well as assessment and general education resources that will support the work of preK–12 classroom teachers and higher education faculty members. Reading Recovery identifies children in first grade who are having difficulty developing literacy skills. The goal is to bring those children to a level at or beyond their peers so that they can benefit from classroom instruction.

The Center for Family Research (CFR) exists as a coalition of OSU faculty members, students, and staff—representing the colleges of Education and Human Ecology; Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences; Law; Medicine; Social and Behavioral Sciences; and Social Work—who have interest and expertise in research, assessment, and treatment efforts as they relate to the family, with particular emphasis on the family’s role in the development and well-being of children and adolescents.
